Description PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONThe Laboratory Animal Sciences Program (LASP)provides exceptional quality animal care and technical support services foranimal research performed at the National Cancer Institute at the FrederickNational Laboratory for Cancer Research. LASP executes this mission byproviding a broad spectrum of state-of-the-art technologies and services thatare focused on the design, generation, characterization and application ofgenetically engineered and biological animal models of human disease, which areaimed at the development of targeted diagnostics and therapies. LASPcontributes to advancing human health, developing new treatments, and improvingexisting treatments for cancer and other diseases while ensuring safe andhumane treatment of animals.KEYROLES/RESPONSIBILITIESThe Animal Caretaker II will be responsiblefor:Feeding and housing laboratory animalsGeneral laboratory animal housekeepingCage changing and sanitationCleaning tasks associated with the upkeep of aresearch animal facilityOrdering and stocking suppliesKeeping simple recordsUtilizing computer skills for email, training,and basic data entryOperate automatic washing and cleaningequipmentCollecting hair, fecal and blood samples fordiagnostic testingRotating holidays and weekendsWork may involve theuse of potentially hazardous material, including biological and chemicalcarcinogen or radiological materials or may be located in areas where suchmaterials are used, require the use of personal protective equipment andadherence to strict safety protocol.Qualifications BASIC QUALIFICATIONSTo be considered forthis position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilitieslisted below:High school diploma or equivalentOne (1) year of job-related animal careexperience and ALAT certification or two (2) years laboratory animal careexperience with high school diploma Ability to handle a variety of laboratoryanimalsAbility to keep simple recordsAbility to operate automatic washing andcleaning equipmentAbility to lift up to 50 lbs. and wearrespiratory protective equipment if necessaryKnowledge of routine tasks associated withgeneral laboratory animal careMust be able to obtain and maintain a securityclearancePREFERREDQUALIFICATIONSCandidates with thesedesired skills will be given preferential consideration: Good organization/observational skillsDesire to learn new tasksComputer/data entryAbility to work in a team environment
